EGBA turns to AI to untangle Europe’s gambling compliance maze
Online gaming regulations across Europe are deeply fragmented. So much so that the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) believes artificial intelligence may be the only viable solution to the legal puzzle posed by this patchwork of divergent—and often contradictory—gambling laws across the continent.
“We are committed to promoting the highest standards of compliance across Europe’s online gambling sector,” stated Maarten Haijer, Secretary General at EGBA. However, achieving this goal is far from straightforward. “With 27 countries in the EU, each with their own gambling laws and a myriad of requirements, harmonisation is a difficult path,” he added.
AI as a compliance game-changer
To address this complexity, designed to support operators. The tool will offer “real-time, expert-validated insights and automated regulatory news scanning,” using AI to create what EGBA calls “a single, reliable source of information for compliance management.”
The association says the platform will help both industry groups and individual operators better navigate Europe’s complex regulatory environment. The project will be developed in partnership with Letzz, a compliance technology company.
The cost of regulatory fragmentation
So far, the EU has made only limited progress toward harmonising its gambling regulations. This lack of coordinated policy creates legal uncertainty for operators. Even though the freedom to provide services across member states is a core principle of the EU, the reality is that operators must secure individual licences—or, at the very least, comply with widely varying rules—in each country where they operate.
This lack of harmonisation ultimately means that operators have to face significant legal and technical hurdles if they want to expand their operations.
A challenge that Letzz wants to turn into an opportunity. “By transforming compliance from a challenge into a strategic business asset, we’re helping operators stay abreast of the latest regulatory changes,” declared Daniel Gambin, Co-Founder and CEO at Letzz.
