Macau appoints Ng Wai Han as Director of city’s gaming regulator
The Macau government has appointed Ng Wai Han as the new director of the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ), the city’s casino regulator. Her one-year term began on Wednesday, as confirmed in an official dispatch issued by the Secretary for Economy and Finance.
This is the first time a woman has been named to lead the bureau. The position had been vacant since Adriano Marques Ho stepped down in December to become director-general of the Macau Customs Service. In the meantime, deputy director Lio Chi Chong served as acting head.
Issuing a , Macau’s Secretary for Economy and Finance, Tai Kin Ip said, “Ng Wai Han has the professional competence and aptitude to perform the role of Director of the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau, which is demonstrated by her curriculum vitae.”
Extensive civil service career
Ng has more than 20 years of experience in Macau’s civil service. She worked in the Labour Affairs Bureau from 1999 to 2017, holding senior roles including acting deputy director. She later joined the Public Administration and Civil Service Bureau, first as deputy director and then as director from September 2023.
Ng earned a bachelor of laws and a master’s degree in criminal law from Sun Yat-Sen University in Guangzhou. Her legal education and long administrative career are considered valuable for her role in overseeing Macau’s gaming industry.
Leadership changes
Earlier in February, deputy director Peter Chui Hou Ian concluded his two-year term with the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau, leaving one of the bureau’s two deputy director positions vacant. His departure came shortly after the bureau had been without a permanent director since December last year, when Adriano Marques Ho stepped down to take on a new role as director-general of Macau Customs. In the absence of a permanent leader, Lio Chi Chong, a deputy director, had been serving as the acting head of the bureau.
Meanwhile, Lei Seak Chio was appointed as the new deputy director of the DICJ, bringing a wealth of experience in public administration.
